We face a number of problems due to traffic jam. Simply, we waste time, get delayed to reach office or attend an important meeting. Some times, traffic jam causes loss of life, when we are taking a patient whose condition is very critical. I don’t need to elaborate them. It is now a common problem. The important question-Is there any longstanding solution to beat traffic congestion? Yes, there is. The UK researchers have found it. They are now coming up with a new in car-navigation device, which informs motorists about traffic jam much before and suggests them the best route to avoid congestion.
The gadget is known as ‘Congestion Avoidance Dynamic Routing Engine’ (CADRE). It uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide live traffic information shared between vehicles fitted with a special GPS.
CADRE collects information from the GPS devices in other cars, prepares a traffic status report 5 to 10 miles away of a situation and suggests drivers about the potential queues. The information is sent to road users over GPRS to the driver’s mobile phone and projects how long the journey may take place if they prefer the same route. The device advises alternative routes to get rid of traffic jam.
As of now, the navigation system has been successfully implemented on 2,100 journeys taken place in Hampshire on busy routes including the M27, M3 and A3.
CADRE is developed by a consortium consisting of the University of Portsmouth, Smartcom Software, ViaMichelin and Hampshire County Council. It will be commercially available in 2010. The technology will be implemented on ferries, trains and planes.
