Ubuntu Mobile OS for UMPCs and MIDs: Pre-release glimpse

Posted By: Alpheus Danson | Sep 25 2008

Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and UMPC’s will now have a new interface to flaunt. A pre-release of Linux-based Ubuntu Mobile is doing the rounds. From the looks of it, Ubuntu Mobile appears quite comprehensive for small hand-held devices that function without a keyboard. It comes bundled with the Mozilla Thunderbird, Pidgin Instant Messenger, OpenOffice.org office suite, Totem and Rhythmbox Music Players, a CD ripper and disc burner, and a custom web browser from Ubuntu called the midbrowser. The mobile OS supports 1024x600 resolution devices, although this may be an eyesore at times with smaller screens.

Watch This: Ubuntu’s Netbook Remix OS for netbooks had earlier created ripples with its user-friendliness. Now, the Ubuntu Mobile for keyboard-less touchscreen 7 to 9-inch UMPCs guarantees similar or better results in its segment. However, there are a few glitches that the company needs to address. Full-screen modes for applications aren’t easy on the eyes always. Since it’s still a minor issue, we’d have to wait for a complete review of the OS once it launches officially.

Word around the Web:

The geek from Electronista says:

The free, open-source software is expected to compete chiefly with Windows in the MID space but may be joined by an updated mobile version of Mac OS X.
