If you're excited about the latest Microsoft's Origami UMPC, let me tell you the real truth - it's a sham.

As per research firm Gartner Inc. the true Origami UMPC, as promised by Microsoft, will take at least two years to fruition. The current technology doesn't parallel the vision dreamed by the software giant.

The current device to hit in Q2 is just a demo version, a sort of, that doesn't fulfills the requirements of a PDA, and is too small to be a useful "lifestyle computer", as they claim.

Other factors that kill the current Origami UMPC include:

1. Price: Placed between $799-to-$999 it'll make you think twice as other options are also available that gives same functionality. Also it'll take some time for a 2-pound computer with a 7-inch touch screen packed with eight-hour battery to be tagged with a sub-$400 price.

2. Low-cost software bundles on which Microsoft and Intel Corp. are still working on.

3. Wanting in a better interface that also includes text-entry options along with thumb-typing and also compatibility with Vista.

Gartner doubts the timing of the launch and believes that 'mainstream acceptance wouldn't occur until after 2009'.
