keyhole surgery simulation

One might say that the conventional training methods used by expert surgeons to train novices is the best training method, but a study at the Copenhagen University Hospital reveals a different story. A team of researchers from this University has backed simulators to surgeons and the results affirm that the procedural training using simulators is far more efficient. As per the study published in the current issue of the British Medical Journal, surgeons trained using virtual reality training on keyhole surgery took a median time of 12 minutes to complete the operation whereas the ones using conventional ways took a median time of 24 minutes.

The work of novices assisted by simulators was comparable to those of intermediately experienced laproscopists as they were not only quick but also precise with their skills. The prowess of simulation is being comprehended and experts believe that this could help improve safety for patients and operation room efficiency for doctors if incorporated into the curriculum of all surgical trainees.
