Among latest safety technologies, Toyota demonstrated its new 4.5-meter-tall and 7.1-meter wide pod called the world’s most true-to-life driving simulator at its Higashifuji Technical Center near Mt. Fuji, south of Tokyo. This is the first to move laterally and particularly meant to analyze driving characteristics under various conditions such as drunkenness and drowsiness.
The simulator has a 360-degree concave video screen to create a virtual environment and illusion of moving on the road. Completed last September, it has become first lateral moving system with longest range of 35-meters front to back and 20-meters from right to left.
Along with Toyota’s Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), based on global positioning system receivers and sensors to allow communication between cars and road infrastructure, this new technology aims to add required safety functions and other requirements in its cars to avoid collisions and hence causalities. After due modifications and tuning, Toyota aims to start putting it to use as early as in next April.
