The death of the atomic clock is near. Apparently, it was necessary, as we can no more fiddle with even a fraction of a second, particularly in the era of modern technological applications including GPS and telecommunication.
To achieve the desired effect and trap an accurate time signal, the traditional Caesium-based atomic clocks that work on microwave emissions, will be replaced by clocks that use optical frequencies and ions rather than atoms.
Scientists at the National Physics Laboratory (NPL) ‘are using a light emitting Strontium ion trapped and cooled by lasers to push the accuracy of clocks.’ The new Strontium clocks will be highly accurate and be perhaps be effectively used in navigation and telecommunication systems.

Towards accurate time keeping: Strontium clocks to replace Atomic clocks

Comments
i have a medion atomic wall clock about the only thing i got from my divorce lol. She through out thr instuctions on reprogramming it on me and i was hoping you could help.the only model number i can give you is md41199 on the back of the clock i cant seem to get it to display th outside temp. I have changed the batteries and have let it sit. Now i am living in a metal mobile home and am wondering if the sheiling on the trailor will effect it.
Thanks for your time
Rick
In order to get the temp displayed (it should be in raised plastic letters on the back of the clock) you have to put the batteries in the outside transmitter first, then put them in the clock and wait for the temperature to display. Then set the clock. It’s kind of a PITA, but that’s how you have to set it.
If you need the manual... follow this link ...

I have followed the instructions to the letter numerous times and the thing still does not work withe md41199 transmitter (sensor).
When I take the clock within the range of another transmitter of an EnviroStation transmitter it picks up the signal and displays the time, temp, et al.
So the md41199 is busted and there is no way to replace it that I have found.
