Touchscreen vending machine knows your age, sex and choice of drink
Another inclusion in the list of high-tech vending machines is this extraordinary vending machine located on Shinagawa station platform in Tokyo. The clever machine is like a large billboard, which shows the drink within only when the user nears it. The machine functions like any normal vending machine, as in accepting coins and commuter cards, but is intelligent enough to guess your age, sex and the drink you’d prefer even before you make a choice.

Developed by JR East Water Business these machines let the user touch the screen to choose the drink, and once paid, dispense the choice of drink in the dispenser below. The vending machines are built-in with three motion sensors and a camera. While the sensors detect the person near the machine, the camera on board estimates the person’s age and sex.

The 47-inch JR East Water’s touchscreen vending machine is network-connected, and has been installed to collect real-time data of popular drinks and the consumers that buy them. Currently there are two vending machine installed but JR East Water Business plans to add eight more to train stations in Tokyo by October.
