Tapping into the optical storage department, with a view to deliver higher storage capacities at smaller form factor and lesser price, Toshiba in collaboration with Keio University, Tokyo, has developed a postage stamp sized 1TB SSD. Way too small to anything similar in the genre, the SSD with a 128GB NAND Flash chips and a single controller embedded into it, boasts 2Gbps transfer speeds courtesy short-range, electromagnetic communication on which it relies. There’s no mention of a prospective availability date yet, but this 70% more efficient SSD as the makers suggest, would be ready by 2012.
