Toshiba releases Wipe to clear Self-Encrypting Disk Drives before disposal

Adding to our data safety needs, Toshiba has announced Wipe - software which can securely erase sensitive data when the system is powered-down or when a self-encrypting hard drive is removed from the system. Created as an enhancement to Toshiba's Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) hard disk drives, the Wipe can also be used to erase user data before returning a leased system or decommissioning a system before disposal or re-purposing. We learn that Wipe can automatically undo a hard drive security key when its power supply is turned off, thus making the entire data unreadable, besides invalidating sensitive document image data automatically erasing the self-encrypting hard drive’s internal encryption key.
