Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD) is now touting an LCD panel, which is able to take in finger-touch input via photo sensors under an assortment of light settings from dark indoor to bright outdoor. The panel identifies reflection from a finger using backlight in dark indoor and finger shadows using external light in bright outdoor.

The mock-up LCD panel is a 2.8-inch, WQVGA (400 x 240 pixels), low-temperature polycrystalline Si (p-Si) TFT display. This replica has been tested OK to make out finger-touch input in a wide range of light intensity. Moreover, it sports input using an optic pen.

The LCD panle will be showcased at the Flat Panel Display International (Display 2007) at Tokyo Big Sight from April 11 to 13.
