Launching the war in the real sense, I hope you guys know I’m talking about the war between the HD DVD and Blu-ray formats, Toshiba began selling its HD-XA1 high-definition player in Japan for about 110,000 yen, i.e. around $850.
The two different types of HD DVD players are supposed to hit the US in April. The high definition DVD players promise, of course along with the Blu-ray, open a new era in interactive entertainment delivering cinematic quality images.
It’ll not be easy to convince the consumers and convince them to shift to the new format, especially when they’ve to fight with the equally equipped, or say better equipped, Blu-ray.
With giants like Panasonic and Sony already in the race, the main role will be played by controversial issue of making these format disks available to the consumers. By the end of this year, Toshiba is promising to deliver at least 200 DVD titles for HD DVD players and is looking forward to sell 600,000 to 700,000 of the new players till March 2007.
