Hard drives are getting smaller and smaller. Toshiba Corp plans to launch thinner hard drives for sub notebooks and ultraportable PCs. The hard drives are going to measure 1.8 inches instead of 2.5 inches reducing the size by almost 40% and can store 80 GB and 160 GB. The areal density has been increased to 246.8 gigabits from the older model’s 182.8 gigabits. The 80 GB model is going to weigh 60 grams which is slightly lighter than its predecessor. The hard drives include 3Gbit/sec. serial ATA interface, and have an average seek time of 15 milliseconds, 8MB of cache and spin speeds of 5,400 rpm. The hard drives will be made available to manufacturers and consumers by August. Such advances in mobile processors and wireless connectivity technologies create a lot of interest among consumers and manufacturers alike and the demand for smaller and thinner mobile PCs would increase dramatically. Though you may have to wait for a couple of months for the hard drives, they definitely are going to help you use smaller and more efficient mobile PCs.
