Soon the Tokyo fire department will be using Water jet cutters and blower vehicles for rescue operations.

The latest is the water jet cutter. This can be used in areas where the rescue procedure is hampered because of a further fire hazard. The water jet cutter combines a high-pressure blast of water with sand. The pressure is so enormous that it can make a 1.5-centimeter cut through a 2-centimeter thick plate of steel in just a minute.

The major benefit of the system is that it does not produce a fire risk and can be easily used in accident sites where flammable substances have been spilled.

The agency has also introduced ‘blower’ vehicles that can create a last of wind of up to 45 meters per second and can be used to disperse clouds of harmful gases from work areas.

These systems will soon be made available to the Fire Departments of Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka and Sapporo.
