Tobii will deploy eye tracking and control technology in Lenovo laptops

Swedish company Tobii and Lenovo are planning to develop an eye tracking and control technology that can control the interface of a computer. In short, this would be a laptop that would track and take commands from eye movements. Staring at a particular icon means opening it or deriving information from it. Barbara Barclay, General Manager of Tobii, North America said that "What if you could just look to where you're going to take your mouse and the [cursor] just appears there. If you're have to look at something anyway, why not have that actually facilitate the movement you're getting ready to make?" If what said is true, then our future laptops won't require a mouse and cursor.

Till now, both the companies have made 20 prototypes which demonstrated simple tracks for performing desired tasks. With minimum effort, the user can scroll the interface and also select a particular application. Henrik Eskilsson, CEO of Tobii Technology, has said that "more than anything else, the Tobii laptop prototype is proof that our eye tracking technology is mature enough to be used in standard computer interfaces." So there are many questions related to this technology, like: How would the mechanism function? And what would happen, if two or more people would watch the interface? These questions will be cleared up on March 5th, when the first laptop with eye tracking and control will be showcased at CeBIT, Hannover.
