After keeping its users in wilderness and giving false promises that video downloads will be available with TiVo they are now finally rolling out the downloadable services and many other facilities with TiVo Desktop software.
TiVo will be providing DRM-free web videos, podcasts videos and user generated videos. The service will cost a new user $25 but the old customers can easily download the free upgrade. The in built software will automatically convert downloads into MPEG-2 files so that they can be viewed on TV.
The next plan that TiVo released was the shareable channel for sharing user generated content and can be searched via TiVo boxes. What it will do is that instead of sending video content via Internet or DVD’s the users can use this TiVo channel to share and distribute content.
In a significant deal the TiVo will also provide CBS.com programming via broadband and this facility will be called TiVoCast.
What will be interesting to see is what difference it creates to the overall experience and two of the above (TiVocast and the content sharing option) look like clones of YouTube and the LX.TV that I covered yesterday.
