There is a good news for all you couch potatoes who love watching your favorite movies at home. Now you can store more than 18 hours worth of high definition videos on a single disk. That’s right; Maxell announced that it would launch a 200GB Blu-ray disc by the year 2009.
Hitachi Maxell, or Maxell as it is well known is a Japanese company that manufactures consumer electronic goods. The company name is actually a compression of the words ‘Maximum capacity’ and ‘dry cell‘!
Maxell’s announcement of its Blu-ray disc comes after TDK, another company that specializes in recording solutions, announced its venture into the 200GB Blu-ray disc in August 2006. However, TDK has not set a launch date for its 200GB Blu-ray disc.
Currently, TDK already has a 100GB prototype disc, which it launched in May last year. It has managed this by creating four 25GB layers to reach the 100GB storage capacity. If you have been paying attention, then you guessed right - the 200GB Blu-ray will be created using eight layers of 25GB data on a single side of the disk. One wonders how our disk readers are going to handle this data layering!
With so much storage capacity, hard disk back ups should become child’s play. Compared with standard Blu-ray discs, which have a capacity of 50GB, the 200GB Blu-ray looks like Titanic sized storage space. However, compared with other storage devices that are currently available in the market and considering that these disks hit the market only in 2009; will they really be offering anything beyond expectation?
Some more question for you to munch on - what does a person do with so much storage capacity? Can people actually sit through 18 hours of non-stop video watching? Can the world ultimately be contained in an oyster? Who knows perhaps the answer to all these questions is yes!
