The ICCL: Miners' messiah

After half a dozen movies about tragic underground and 'trapped below the rubble' deaths, an Australian company has finally stuck its leg out to build the Integrated Communications Cap Lamp (ICCL).

Designed to prevent mining mishaps, the ICCL is a brainchild of Tiller & Tiller.

Tiller & Tiller has collaborated with Mine Site Technologies to develop a practical emergency device, which is essentially a pager that uses ultra low frequencies to transmit messages through thick walls of rubble and rock.

With the help of the ICCL, trapped miners can communicate with rescue teams and gather information about evacuation routes.

The cap lamp flashes when a signal is received. Subsequently, the pager starts buzzing to let the miners know that help is on its way.

The ICCL can be used to communicate with groups as well as individual units. With over $3 million sales annually, this device is the only commercial device of its kind. Miners can now heave a sigh of relief, thanks to ICCL!
