Mobility defines modern-day technology. If you can’t carry a gadget around with ease, it is archaic. Notebook manufacturers are increasingly subscribing to this theory, which best explains the surge of sub-notebooks with 8-10inch displays and weighing as light as 1 kilogram. MSI certainly doesn’t wish to be left behind in the rat race. The company has finally announced the pricing details and launch date of its Eee PC killer machine - the MSI Wind. With a string of awards (e.g. ‘The Most Wanted Christmas Gift’ by Amazon.com), the Asus Eee PC was destined to be the laptop of the future. However, from what we gather, the Wind might give the Asus laptop some stiff competition.
MSI’s mini notebook, which is hitting the stands on June 3rd, will feature 8.9″ to 10″ displays with backlighting and will weigh just 2.2lbs (1 kg) vis-a-vis the single option 8.9″ display of the Eee PC that weighs a trifle less at 2.18lbs. The resolution is at par, though, with a reasonable 1024×600. While the radical Wind laptops will be powered by Intel Atom processors, the older Eee PC runs on a 900 MHz Intel Mobile CPU. The Wind, however, leaves its rival far behind with 80GB 2.5″ hard drives as opposed to the 20 GB SSD on the Eee PC 900. The latter, though, gets one up on the keyboard design, which is certainly more finger-friendly compared to the conspicuously cramped 0.69-inch (17.5-mm) keys on the Wind.
At $399 for the Linux version (512MB of RAM) and $549 for the Windows XP model (1GB of RAM), the Wind is certainly a better bet compared to the 1GB Linux powered Eee PC that costs around $549.And with black, white, silver, and pink color options to choose from, Wind would certainly give the pearl white Eee PC 900 a run for its money. Which one would you go for?
