Admittedly, Microsoft Surface has enthralled us all, but owning one of those is still a bit of a fantasy for most people given its hefty $10k price tag. But if you still want to show off a high-tech coffee table to all your nerdy friends, this DIY project might interest you. Proposed by engineers at Eyebeam, a New York arts and technology center, the instructions for making the Cubit, a multi-touch tabletop display, are now available online and allow users to create their own scaled-down version of the Surface for less than a tenth of the original’s price. All you need to do is order the DIY kit online, setup the boxy table, plug in a webcam with an infrared filter and a small image projector, install the Cubit software, and voila! You are all set to give up human interaction till the neighbors call the cops to check up on you.
