Where scientists are hell bent upon splitting second into micro and nanoseconds, Long Now hopes to fabricate a colossal clock Y10K model that would tick once a year and ding dong just once in a century. Hence, the years would be designated with 5 digits with a time span of 10,000 years. Well, Supercomputer designer Daniel Hills terms it to be the world’s slowest computer. It would be solar powered indicating the longevity of our planet. What keeps me interested is the huge amount of $500,000 to be spent on its production. The proposed site for the clock is somewhere in the Snake Range of Nevada on an 11,600 feet high ridge. Neal Stephenson’s upcoming novel - Anathem hints towards a similar device. And so, it’s an unexpected blend of science and literature.
