TEROOS: Shoulder-mounted telecom avatar for long distance video chat

TEROOS is a shoulder-mounted avatar for telecommunication. The concept, developed by a group of researchers from Keio University, relies on communication aids, such as a camera, mic and speaker, for clearer communication. It allows the user to have a video chat with another person who is sitting miles away. This robot can move its head through six degrees of freedom with a unidirectional speaker so the communication between the two users is just like whispering into the wearer’s ear. The inbuilt camera in its head segment would show the surrounding to the other person. The expression of the avatar can also be changed accordingly to communicate all sorts of feeling to the other person.

The objective of this technology is to have an uninterrupted communication between two distant users via video calling. The robot-enabled device can be carried on the shoulder. High level micro-controllers and audiovisual aids can bring the feeling of physical togetherness between two persons living miles apart.
