brainvibe
Researchers from France’s Institute for Health and Medical Research have worked a slow but steady process to read a person’s mind. In a development to understanding the intricacies of the mind, these scientists have created the OpenVibe, which is a sensor-embedded wired swimming cap that lets the computer directly record the electrical activities (EEG) of the brain.

The main application of the OpenVibe is to provide patients suffering with locked-in syndrome (a condition wherein the patient is conscious but almost entirely paralyzed) to have control of words. Using the brain that is still functional in patients with such a disability, the system based on the grid of letters on the PC screen and with the cap detects the right letter in the patient’s mind.

The Working:

The user wearing the sensor included wired cap, is made to look at the grid of letters on the screen. As the letter selected it flashes and a brain response tells the computer that this is the one. The computer notes the column the user is looking at when it detects the brain response, and the next time around it identifies the row being looked at. By crossing the information of which column and which row is being looked at, the computer can guess the letter.

The brain understanding is a slow process now, but with the software that can is used to detect the brain response, the system can surely be sped up.
