With the advent of technology came telephone calling and video calling facilities, but nothing replaces the feeling of talking to people face to face. Enters Telenoid R1, a child-sized telepresence robot that lets you feel as if an acquaintance in the distance is right next to you. Designed by Japanese roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro, the robot has sensors to transmit the movements and sounds of the caller and motors that can replicate them. User interact with the robot via a laptop, the control system tracks the user's face and head motion and captures the voice. The motions and voice are relayed to Telenoid, which expresses them while interacting. Developed in collaboration with Osaka University and Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International, the Teleniod will be demonstrated at this year's Ars Electronica festival in Linz, Austria. A research version will be priced around $45,000, while a commercial version about $8,000.
