Robin Murphy, a professor of computer science and engineering from the University of South Florida is all set to develop a robot that can assist humans stuck up in natural calamities and emergency situations. Aptly named the Survivor Buddy, this robot will locate survivors and try to keep them calm. For this, the robot will play soothing music or even beam pictures of loved ones and rescuers trying to locate the person. This will give the person hope, the most essential factor that most often is the difference between life and death. The robot will also help provide a two way communication between the victim and the rescue forces. This project which aims to add a human element to the robots’ functioning, is currently being funded by Microsoft. Though many might wonder why the robots which can reach the victims cannot extricate them from dangerous positions, it is simply because the robots have still not reached the stage of thinking on their own. But looking at the way technology is processing, all this may be possible in the near future. Stick around for more news on Professor Robin Murphy’s Survivor Buddy project.
