To embark upon the needs of customers running short of space, power and cooling, Sun has come up with Project Blackbox, a datacenter wrapped up in a shipping container for quick setup in situations where a fixed location is not feasible, which will allow IT departments to arrange new cost effective as well as rapid data infrastructure.

The package encloses computing, storage and networking components with greatest compactness, performance and efficiency and absolute recyclability as well.

Capable of achieving 20 percent increase in power competence, Blackbox costs 80 percent less per square foot, using Suns' Solaris 10 operating system plus 250 Sun Fire servers with about two petabytes of storage and about seven terabytes of memory.

At present the project is under trial and expected to be in full swing by mid 2007.
