With the recent launch of Toshiba’s inexpensive $500 HD DVD player, Taiwan optical disc drive makers claim that we could be witnessing sub-$500 units in the second half of 2007. The ever-increasing upgrades in widescreen TV’s resolution will augment the market of Blu-ray disks and HD DVD players.
The hearsay made by manufacturers is a result of lowered cost for components like chipsets and a decline in defect rates during product assemblage. Since, around $600 HD DVD players are there in the market at the moment, so we can say that these predictions are within reach.
Moreover, high pricing of Blu-ray will give a push forth to the HD DVD. So, we could be seeing HD DVD players for less than $500 in Q2 this year.
