Students develop one of a kind 'edible display system'

A female research group from the University of Tokyo showcased a prototype of an edible display system at Interaction 2011 pulling much attraction among spectators. Spectacularly, the system that is connected with a computer uses dried fruits as pixels. The edible display system works plotting values in the x-y plane. According to its proposers, the system can draw anything with dried fruits, if a picture of 256 x 256 pixels is prepared on the computer, the command to draw the image will be sent from the computer to the sophisticated hardware, which manipulates rotation and shaking to design the edible image.

The entire process of designing will take a few minutes. For example, to form an L shape with the system, it will take around three to five minutes. The idea behind the edible display system looks very fantastic, especially when it comes from a group of female researchers. It looks like that the hardware can be developed to more advanced and unique system combining female perspectives with science. Indeed, its developers plan to cater the service at big parties as an entertainment robot.

Presenter of the edible display system says,

Edible information is interesting because it has a direct effect on the senses of sight and taste. One of our approaches is related to health, by sensing the user’s physical and emotional state and providing combinations of flavors and colors to match that. Our other approach is for catering at parties and the like, where this system could be used as an entertainment robot. We’d like to develop both of these approaches from now on.
