Student develops hyperopia correcting contact lens

Not being able to see clearly isn’t as bad as not being able to see at all, but is certainly not what anyone would want. Farsightedness of Hyperopia is one condition which needs repair to let the patient see clearly again. So, as an effort in the direction a master’s degree student at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC)-Barcelona Tech, Jaume Pauné, has developed the world's first contact lens that corrects Hyperopia or Farsightedness.

The user’s required to wear the custom-made lens over night, so that the cornea is shaped and when the user gets up he/she has a perfect vision for that day. Using the process called orthokeratology, or ortho-K, the rigid, gas-permeable contact lens creates a coating on the outside of the cornea by applying pressure in the tear film. This pressure changes the shape of the cornea by about 20 µm, thus improving upon the hyperopia steadily. The hyperopia lens is available for $1,270 with $508 for annual lens replacement.
