We presently know the Audi TTS as the unofficial world speed record holder for an autonomous car speeding at 130 kph, about 80 mph. Now, after the reveal by Stanford, we may know it for some added reasons. A robotic race car customized with sensors, GPS guidance and computers, gearing to drift in the climbs of the Pikes Peak sometime next year.

The driverless car is being programmed and designed to figure out how close to the edge of control a car can be driven. Not really possible with the drivers on board (given the life threatening risks and comparatively slower reflexes), they may have the Pikes Peak Audi TTS do it in style. Named Shelley, after the most successful female rally driver Michèle Mouton, the Robotic Audi TTS, will be let lose to drive to limits – perhaps to work out escape routes in pursuit to accident avoidance. Video demonstration after the jump.
