spce elevator
As compared to the space elevator competition held last year, researchers hope to see better technology in the same challenge to be held as early as September 2008. The goals and the prize money have been set. To win the prize level of $2M, participants will have to climb 1 km height with a speed of 5 m/s. In other categories, $900k will be given for a speed of 2 m/s, and prize of up to $50k for those who achieve the target with a speed between 1 and 2 m/s. A pyramid-anchored 4-Ton lift balloon system and 1/2″ diameter Spectra lines cable will support the climb. Renowned names like TRUMPF is contributing a top-of-the-line TruDisk 8002 high power laser for use at the 2008 and 2009 games and on-site operation and engineering support for participating teams.
On the other side, Dilas is offering an integrated light source designed specifically for power beaming application to the 1 km range. These games are also funded by NASA. The technologies displayed here will help it to enhance its space programs and also in testing power beaming for wireless power transfer, and Nano-materials such as Carbon nanotubes for strong structures. The total fund from NASA for the games is presently about $4,000,000.
