Since the high price of the existing Blu-ray players is forcing the customers to invest less on the high-definition movies, Sony has made public its plans to announce a cheaper Blu-ray player in the Q2 this year.

Pricing for the current Sony Blu-ray players:

BDP-S1 Blu-ray player: The price tag for this Blu-ray player reads $999 and this player is aimed straight-forward at the home theater enthusiasts.

BDP-S300: Priced at $599, the yet to be released model is similar to the BDP-S1, including features such as support for DVD upconversion up to 1080p and 24 frames per second output on Blu-ray discs.

But still, the $599 player won’t be taken as one of the cheapest entrant into the next-gen Blu-ray market. Nevertheless, Blu-ray in the form of a 20GB PlayStation 3 costs you for $499. But if we take a note of the HD-DVD pricing, customers can lay their hands on the players for about $400.

Stan Glasgow, president of Sony said hopes that the prices for Blu-ray players should go below $500 and the time will definitely come (though not too early), when we will see a $50 Blu-ray player.
