Smell-O-Vision will emit smell effects during game play

The Smell-O-Vision is the latest innovation in the virtual reality segment which emits appropriate smells while you play a game. If your character is firing a shotgun, then the software will emit the scent of burning caliber. For delivering a closer to reality experience, it has been loaded with 20 pre-loaded smells responding to the situation on screen.

It also features a built-in editing application through which a gamer can make his own scents. The volume control feature also ensures that you are not surrounded by fumes. Some additional cartridges would also extend smells to the home videos.

The makers of this device, Scent Sciences, state that "ScentScape is an innovative digital scent delivery system which provides the extra dimension of scent to gaming, entertainment and other consumer markets." Just connect the Plug-N-Play unit to any PC or gaming console for an enthralling gaming experience of sight, sound and smell.

For years, technicians have struggled to find solutions to combine smell with vision. The idea of using different smells pertaining to the visuals was conceptualized by Director Hans Laube. He has showcased smell-o-vision technology in his 1960 film "Scent of Mystery." Japanese researchers achieved a quick breakthrough by using home-based printers and replacing the ink with various scented liquids to produce aromas, like grapefruit, lavender and cinnamon. Scratch ‘N’ Sniff was one a of its kind smell effect that appeared in magazines and newspapers, which emitted an odor once a label was pulled off.

Scent Sciences is planning to release the ScentScape later this year, and it will cost around $69.99 (£44).
