Silk invisibility cloak takes us closer to being invisible

We at GizmoWatch have been close followers of the invisibility cloaks ever since the concept has traveled out of Harry Porter movies for some reality. Latest attempt in the effort to get even closer to Harry Porter like aspiration comes from Tufts and Boston University students who have created small invisibility cloaks made from gold-coated silk. For now this unique metamaterial has been formed into a 1cm square cloak, which could in the future be used with other wavelengths and visible light spectrum. Deriving its optical properties from the physical structure rater than the chemical makeup, this metameterial is made by stenciling 10,000 gold resonators atop a square cm of silk, which works in the terahertz range between radio and IR. Because silk can be implanted into human body, this new metamaterial opens up its possible usage in biomedical and defense purposes.
