Showcasing 4.3-inch 720p 3D smartphone display at FPD, Japan

This 4.3-inch display smartphone is the world’s first phone with 720p 3D display. Chimei Innolux, the creator of this smartphone, has used the patented technology of MasterImage 3D to create this auto-stereoscopic glasses-free 3D display. The method which allows the 3D technology to be experienced in this smartphone is known as “Cell gap”. The technology that MasterImage 3D has used in this smartphone for 3D is Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier technology.

This smartphone combines the expertise and USP’s of both the companies involved in it. The combination of the technologies and features create something unique in this smartphone about which we will discuss in the later part of the article. But what needs a mention here is that this 4.3-inch glass-free 3D smartphone is something that would change the definition (and expectations) of mobile 3D. Therefore, this smartphone is something that you must watch out for.

Though, this smartphone (and the technology involved in it) has been developed targeting the niche audience, but this 3D smartphone is sure to create a ripple in the smartphone market and thus become an inspiration for smartphone creators.

This phone has been developed by Chimei Innolux Corporation (CMI) in collaboration with MasterImage 3D. While CMI is a premium brand and also one of the leading manufacturers of TFT LCD display devices across the world, MasterImage 3D provides ground-breaking and completely new 3D technology for mobile gadgets as well as theaters. MarterImage, founded in the year 2004 and headquartered in Hollywood, has already established quite a good stand in the 3D market. It has its offices in UK, Korea, Japan and Taiwan. The privately owned company invented cell-matrix parallax barrier (the technology that allows auto-stereoscopic 3D mobile display) and was involved in creating one of the first glassless 3D mobile phones.

What’s new

The smartphone is the first one that can boast of a 720p glass-free 3D display in a mobile phone. Never before has this been introduced to us. Therefore, this is surely the highlight of the mobile phone. Another interesting feature of the phone is that once the viewing angle of the phone is changed and you lose the 3D effect due to the change in angle, you can get crystal clear and accurate 2D viewing of the contents of the phone. Also, the 3D technology works with ease in both landscape and portrait orientations. The technology makes it possible for the user to switch the mode from landscape to portrait or vice versa and at the same time making 3D viewing possible.

What’s refreshing

Though, this is not the first time that 3D technology has been used in mobile phones nor it is the first time that 720p resolution has been loaded in a smartphone. But it is indeed the first time that both these features have been brought together in a smartphone. This phone is the first of its kind to bring 720p resolution along with 3D technology that too while doing away with the special 3D glasses.

Apart from these, what is refreshingly new in this smartphone is the ability of easy switching from 2D to 3D or viewing angles from portrait to landscape and vice versa, the credit of which goes entirely to the new and improved technology used in the phone. So far this easy switch has not been provided because traditional 3D uses a technology that is known as “stripe technology” which doesn’t have provisions to allow such swift switching modes.

Along with all that has been mentioned above, we must make a mention of the change in quality that the new technology has made possible in this smartphone. The images created in the phone are brighter and with reduced moire effects, i.e., there is hardly any ripple-like effect in the display quality of the phone.

Applications

Since this smartphone with its new technology and alluring features is going to change the way the world looks at mobile 3Ds, therefore it is quite possible that the usage of this particular technology and this smartphone also brings a revolution of its own. What makes this technology (and therefore this smartphone) more appealing is the applicability and usability of the technology. Therefore, the convenience of use, the usability, the quality of the 3D display, the freshness in the idea and the newness in the product assure wide acceptance and usage of this smartphone once it is produced and launched for the masses. Now all one has to do is waiting for CMI to release this smartphone in the consumer market.
