Going on a little secret mission, are we? Frisked by the bodyguards of a super-villain what last weapon does one have? Why, the trusted old phone-in-a-shoe, of course. And thanks to Paul Gardner-Stephen, an Australian computer scientist at the Flinders University, the on-screen gadget has managed to make it to the real world. That Dr. Paul fails to appreciate the fun part of the shoe phone is quite a different matter altogether; he wants to use his shoe phone as a biomedical device. As matter of fact, Paul had initially created the device as a theater prop for his friends, but now opines:
A shoe is a good location for housing the electronics required for storing and communicating these (pulse, blood pressure, blood oxygenation) measurements.
Gardner-Stephen has created the device by hollowing out the heels on a pair of rather nice shoes and then stuffing out one of these with a phone and the other with a Bluetooth headset. Once the phone was installed within the heel, the sole has been punched for important buttons and waterproofed using some plastic. Thereafter Dr. Paul simply proceeded to make some calls via voice.
The video shows the phone in action and it seems that the inventor has done a nice job. You are free to try and build this cool gadget on your own, courtesy the step-by-step guide posted by Paul on Instructables. And as cool as the gadget seems, I just can’t get my mind off the fact that eventually you are going to stare into some dog poop if you keep bringing that sole to your face.
