artificial muscle
Cellphone leeches (read ‘all of us’!) rate ‘drained out’ batteries among their top phobias. With a dozen sci-fi movies being made every year, it wouldn’t have been hard to imagine that the cure for this phobia would be an ‘artificial’ limb. No kidding! Researchers in California have developed artificial muscles that can bring your iPhones back in action from their dormant state. Designed for the future, the artificial muscle will be used to design walking robots and highly responsive prosthetics. On a lower scale, the self-healing muscles can generate electricity that can be used for cellphone charging. Built with carbon nanotubes as electrodes, the muscle generates electricity when it contracts post expansion. The scientists have claimed energy efficiency levels of 70% for the artificial muscle. Apparently, it doesn’t stop functioning even when you pierce it with pins. Stuff of cyborg movies, one must admit!
