Have you been fantasizing about paper displays becoming reality in not to distant future? If yes, then stop fantasizing and open up your eyes, as here comes the future! Ok, I got too carried away but here is a revolutionary new paper display exhibited at Display 2008 show in Tokyo. It’s as good as is its traditional counterpart (paper, I mean). Collaborative effort of Seiko Epson and E Ink has resulted in development of this new e-paper which allows user to draw directly using stylus. It is backed up by new controller chip which makes it fast display with resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels and ability support multiple operations and that too without any delays. This screen refreshes at the speed of 50 cycles per second, removing one of the major flaws of older e-papers. Chip will be available from August for device manufacturers and hence we can hope to see a full-fledged e-paper driven device by next year. Video shows the demonstration of e-paper and it is impressive enough to watch out for.
E Link’s CEO Russ Wilcox had this to say about the new e-paper:
With the ability to address many screen regions simultaneously, future devices using this chip could offer a fast menu interface, simple animations, higher grayscale levels and user input through typing and touch.
