Claire Strodtbeck decided what she needed for her home: A home surveillance system that she built with 2 Logitech QuickCams and the eeePC 701’s integrated webcam. However, it needed the power to be consumed 24/7 and hence, The Security Network Control IP Camera is a better solution. The networked video camera system connects directly to a network and has a fast Ethernet (10/100) NIC built in and can support DHCP and static IP addresses. Advantages are being able to control the system remotely and costs $130 for the camera.

All you need to build your own surveillance system is a VGA (640×480)b IP Security Camera, Power adapter, Plug adapter for U.S. outlets, 3′ Ethernet cable, A/V cable (3.5mm minijack to RCA), Drivers CD and the like. It is easy to use and the dim LEDs glow when the camera is switched on. The base of the camera hold a SD card reader which is pretty cool because you don’t have to depend on a network connection and can capture any detected motion directly to the card. However don’t expect the image to be really clear and clarity isn’t all that necessary either. The system is controlled by a built-in web interface and works only with IE, which can be a drawback. However, the interface isn’t that friendly, thanks to IE being the only thing that you could use.
