Seagate has developed HDDs which offer an in-built data encryption technology.

The HDDs are named Momentus 5400 FDE.2 and will boast of 160GB capacity, a serial ATA interface and hardware based Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption.

The drive will be a part of ASI C8015 notebook computer and will also be sold by a number of ASI’s partners that include Newegg.com, PowerNotebooks.com and ZipZoomfly.com.

The ASI machine will also feature a fingerprint reader, 15.4-inch display, Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile 2.0GHz processor, NVIDIA graphics with 256MB memory, 1GB RAM and a DVD rewritable drive. The machine will sell for $2,150.

The new drives by Seagate are equipped with ‘DriveTrust’ technology which according to the company is a better way for encrypting data that is stored laptops.

The technology will help safeguard your data when the system has been stolen or lost.

Seagate also plans to sell the drive to the OEMs all around the globe.

Seagate has also commented that the encryption is a much better way to protect data than software based encryption that is used for full disk encryption as in case of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP).
