Scientists developing 3D camera vision to let robots see like humans

Robots have got everything from human emotions to human touch, now European scientists under sensor-based 3D foveation (digital imaging process) are developing robots with vision similar to a human eye. The eyesight for these robots will work in the same way, helping them distinguish between important objects in the field of vision, just like in case of humans. The motive to construct these intelligent robots is to have them function in areas where humans cannot – especially places like nuclear reactors and other dangerous environments.

Describing the efficiency of the robots with 3D camera vision, project leader Jens Thielemann says: ‘These robots good at sampling everything in their field of vision equally, sample the uninteresting objects equally well as the object the robot is interacting with.’ If all goes as per plan and the scientist are able to provide robots with vision to mimic the human eye, then we’ll soon witness robots with human-like understanding of the environment around them.
