There are times in life when people wish they could remove a particularly painful thought from their mind. That usually never happens, but it could in the near future. Tests by Dutch researchers showed volunteers who had been given the pill had a much lower response for a bad encounter with spiders, as compared to those who had not been given the tablet. This pill is based on “beta blocker” drugs that erase the bad memory and interfere with the brain’s re-creation of stressful events.

So there’s no chance of a “relapse” and the stressful events can successfully be thrown away. This could lead people to happier, less stressful lives. But there’s an ethical struggle involved, as critics say the pill, in a way, messes with the idea of being human. Then, there’s the question of the pills actually being effective, mild electric shocks and spider photographs can’t actually be as strong an emotion as some of the other things people may have witnessed.
