Scientists contrive of an enhanced human skin system than can literally stop bullets!

It may look like a rather rough iteration of Jason's mask, but this according to scientists, can prove to one of most revolutionary inventions of the last 700 years (at least since muskets were introduced in warfare). Because it is an advanced form of skin that will have the strength and capacity to stop bullets.

The 'death defying' power of the substrate comes from a unique protein component, which is generally found in silk spiders. The scientists have managed to infuse this protein element into the milk of genetically engineered goats. Now, the spider-silk protein can be gathered from this milk and combined to create a fabric like substance, which in turn can be biologically fused with a human skin.

Named as the '2.6g 329m/s' project (after the weight and velocity of .22 caliber bullet), the nigh sci-fi endeavor is undertaken by the Forensic Genomics Consortium in the Netherlands. Their main idea is to replace the default protein of keratin present in the human skin by the super-tough spider silk protein, which would literally result in a 'naturalistic' bulletproof membrane impervious to small scale missile projectiles. The initial testing phase has already incorporated the 'growing' of natural skin over this silk protein enhanced skin.

Interestingly, this is not the first time silk has been used to stop missile fire. Historically, the Chinese and Mongols issued a decree to their soldiers to wear silk under-clothing for its antiseptic properties related to barbed arrow piercing. And now fast forwarding to 21st century, it's time for Superman and Dr. Manhattan to step aside. Because this might just be an invention that can make guns obsolete.
