Horror stories of mobile phone and laptop batteries exploding when users were engaged on the phones or using their laptops or even charging have dominated tech magazine cover stories with phone companies, laptop and battery manufacturers recalling millions of “supposedly” defective batteries. All that could change and both consumers and manufacturers could benefit as researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research in Würzburg, Germany have developed a new range of Non Explosive Lithium-ion batteries. What the researchers have essentially done is, they have given the liquid explosive electrolyte found in the older type lithium batteries the boot and have used solid electrolyte in the newer range of Lithium-Ion batteries that they have developed. So, no liquid electrolyte means no leakage and no explosion. The catch here is, this technology could take 3 to 5 years to filter down to the consumer market to be used in laptops and mobile phones. So till then, watch out.
