Say goodbye to air pollution with the ‘8’ bubble dress!

If you are concerned about the effect of air pollution on your health, the 8 dress might just be what you have been waiting for. NYU student Hana Marie Newman is making a fashion statement with her new ‘8’ dress. Made out of transparent materials, this bubble dress with its rather space suit-like appearance comes equipped with a built-in oxygen tank. This rather bulky costume is meant to be more than just a dress – it’s supposed to be a protection shield. Which then brings us to the statement that Hana’s making: ‘Save your own skin first’.

The design is addressed to the average city dweller. With increasing levels of pollution in cities across the world, each city dweller is exposed to a higher chance of developing asthma, heart disease, appendicitis and lung disorders on a daily basis due to the high levels of air pollution in cities. This one is especially designed for the fashion-conscious city of New York.

Hana’s design is not just a comment on air pollution but also how people prefer to deal with the ecological problem that is threatening lives worldwide. The dress, which works more as an accessory, will keep the individualistic urban woman protected from the risks that surround her. The men might just have to wait for their turn. In a world where it is each man for himself (or in this case, each woman for herself), this dress is a perfect fit.

Newman writes:

“8 challenges inverted quarantine and the response to perceived toxic environments by exposing it’s folly and highlighting the next trend in the green movement with an elegant dress.

8 exposes the wearer while closing her off. It glorifies the oxygen tank and is a constant reminder to the user that she is breathing clean air and to the audience that they are not. It is a catalyst for a larger conversation questioning how what we do individually influences the way we collectively solve problems and raise airwareness.”

So we won’t be seeing the 8 dress on the streets soon. And the image of people walking around wearing 8 dresses seems rather funny right now. However, seeing how these serious issues are going unchecked, it might not be a wonder if this futuristic space bubble like dress might actually become tomorrow's reality.
