Surf board manufacturing industry may bounce back from the verge of extinction, due to regulations on the manufacturing of polyurethane surfboard blanks, with this new remarkable low-density energy-absorbing foam developed by researchers at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California.
The environmentally friendly foam called ‘TufFoam’ is a ‘water-blown, closed-cell, rigid polyurethane foam that features formulations as low as 2 lbs.-per-cubic foot density’ making it a light and apt substance for the making surf boards. The use of TufFoam doesn’t stop here, it also highly useful in thermal and electrical insulation, and production of car bumpers and airplane wings.
TufFoam is considered environment friendly due to the absence of hazardous toluene diisocyanate (TDI).
