Samsung's new SCX laser printers address shared printer issues effectively

Samsung, one of the global leaders in office appliances, has launched a new range of laser printers named the SCX to address some of the problems faced in using shared printers in a small or medium business or even in a user group in a larger business. The printer range includes SCX-4833FD,SCX-4833FR with SCX-5637FR at the top of the range. The printers are all multi-functional with scan, copy and fax capability in addition to mono color printing. The SCX-5637FR can deliver up to 80,000 prints per month which is generous even for a shared printer. To support this high throughput, it is equipped with dual paper cassettes to hold 820 sheets at a time, reducing the need for frequent paper reload.

The printer can handle different thicknesses of paper and even cardstock and envelopes, the toner cartridge in its highest capacity can print 10,000 pages and the polymerized toner is said to be economical. This should help reduce printer downtime for toner replacement.A new feature in this printer is for improved paper handling. A semi-retarded roller has been added in the paper feed mechanism that provides backward friction during paper feed. This is said to substantially reduce paper jamming or double feeding which are the main pain areas for printer productivity.

Of special relevance is a one touch Eco button that provides double side printing and reduced toner usage. The graphic LCD operator panel indicates numbers for paper saving, reduced carbon emission and reduced electricity usage for the Eco mode to evangelize resource conservation.

The technology innovations include a 1 GB LAN interface so that very large files can be quickly transferred from the users' computers to the the printer. The printer has been provided with a 2 GB flash memory Document Box that is very useful when the user wants to combine materials from different servers or sources into a single print output, without the need to first compile the file on his own computer. Another feature that appeals in a shared printer is the provision for secure printing of confidential material. For such printing needs, after the user send the print order to the computer, he has to walk to the printer and enter a PIN code for the print action to start. The user can then collect his print material and not leave it lying in the printer tray.

The printer also displays status on the LAN so that the user can see the print queue status, get toner low warnings etc from his work station. The LAN interface also permits remote monitoring and diagnostics that Samsung Offers as a service through its SyncThru-Admin software. A companion application named CounThru provides accounting functions like number of copies made by each user for internal billing purposes.

The SCX-5637FR measures a compact 469 mm X 438 mm X 447 mm , weighs 16.55 kg and consumes 600 watts in run mode and 50 watts in ready mode. The price is expected to be under $ 700. The lower SCX-4833 models include all of the features of the 5637, but deliver slightly lower print speed ( 31 ppm vs 35 ppm) and lower capacity toner cartridge (5000 pages vs 10,000) and smaller paper cassetes (500 sheets vs 820 sheets).
