Samsung M80: Hard Drives with Fall Protection
Many of you, who move around with the company of your laptop, have a fear of dropping and breaking it. As the main parts that cannot sustain a fall even from a few inches are the hard disks.
Hard Disks today are so brittle that a fall from even a few inches will render them useless. But solving this problem a bit Samsung has launched M80 series of Hard Disks that have sensors enabling them to park its heads and turn itself off protecting the head and the platter from contacting as this is the main reason for any hard disk to go useless.
However, don't drop it from your balcony, as the listed figure is only 30cm.
The disks will be available in versions of 80GB, 120GB and 160GB. They will also feature a 'Hybrid Latch System', that will reduce the noise the disk generates when its heads are moving.
