Samsung Develops World's First Double Sided TFT LCD Panel
In a major breakthrough in display technology Samsung has developed the world's first double sided LCD panel that can display different images or videos on both side of the screen.
Other dual sided LCD displays have also been developed but according to Samsung the major difference in their product is that it can display an entirely different set of images on both sides of the display while the counterparts display the same image on two sides.
This new technology will replace two displays with one and will also reduce the thickness of the displays by about a millimeter.
According to Samsung this new technology incorporates the use of its new double-gate TFT architecture. TFT gates are electronic components that control the way the liquid flows in a LCD panel, thereby creating the image onto the screen. The new display uses two gates that can operate a pixel that enables the display to have different images on both sides.
These high-tech displays also make use of Samsung's ASG technology which helps in increasing the number of gates without increasing the size of the IC's.
The new Samsung Mobile display also makes use of a single backlight instead of two so we can also say that they do not cause the battery to run out easily. One side of the display operates in transmissive mode and the reverse side in reflective mode.
This new double sided LCD is 2.6mm thick and 2.22-inch wide. It is a QVGA display and offers a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels.
