Samsung BDP-1000: World's first blue-ray player launched

Samsung Electronics' finally launched the world's first blue-ray disc video player, Samsung BDP-1000, in New York on Thursday for $999. The player will dawn in East Asian countries, including Korea, after August.

Yang Dae-oh, senior manager of Samsung's digital media business, said:

What is important for the commercial launching is the software. We are waiting for Hollywood studios to make contract with Korean movie distributors on Blue-ray titles. Also, the delayed launch for the Korean market is to avoid the World Cup period as all attention is on that.

The groups formed, one vouching for Blu-ray and the other for HD-DVD, is no doubt unhealthy for consumers seeking better technology. If Samsung and other major players, including Toshiba and Sony, somehow come out with players compatible with both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, it would have been a great step forward. But sadly, the new Samsung BDP-1000 only support Blu-ray.
