‘RunBot’ is the world’s fastest robot developed by researchers from Germany and Scotland. The 30 cm high robot takes 3.5 leg-lengths per second which is a record-breaking speed previously hold by 120 cm MIT’s “Spring Flamingo” that used to take just 1.4 leg-lengths per second.
Inspired by human neuron reflexes the robot is controlled by a simple program and uses few sensors to detect just two things - ‘when a foot touches the ground, and when a leg swings forward.’ And that’s the main reason behind its speed - simple system and simple neuronal controller.
The RunBot mimics the cycle of walking in the same way as the humans do, swinging one leg at a time, stretching it and pulling the other one front and bending the previous back with the help of sensors controlling the joints.
